Mexico City Grand Prix: Kimi Antonelli to miss media day with illness

Andrew Benson

Antonelli is one of two drivers to miss media day with an illness.

The other is Cadillac's Valtteri Bottas, who his team said was "unwell".

A Cadillac spokesperson said: "The team has taken the decision to allow him a day of rest, to support his recovery.

"This is a precautionary measure and does not currently affect his participation in the remainder of the race weekend. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates if necessary."

On Wednesday, Cadillac announced a new contract for the Finn's team-mate Sergio Perez, who will stay with the team until at least 2029.

They made no mention of Bottas' future in the announcement, and are said by insiders to be considering whether to promote their American reserve driver Colton Herta into F1.

Herta is having his fifth outing of the year in practice on Friday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, as the team seek to earn him enough mileage to secure the so-called super licence that is required to race in F1.

Herta, previously a front-runner in the US-based Indycar championship, moved to Formula 2 this year with the intention of preparing himself for F1.

His season has not gone well and he is currently 19th in the standings with a best result of fifth place.

However, Cadillac feel he has shown more potential in his F1 outings, which also include a number of runs in cars from previous years.

No decision has been made on whether Bottas or Herta will partner Perez in 2027.

Russell said on Thursday in Mexico City that his focus for the rest of the season was to try to understand the reasons why his form has been fluctuating so much.

The Briton has won three races to Antonelli's nine and after the first couple of races has never looked like mounting a consistent challenge to his team-mate.

"It's definitely important for me to try and gain some consistency," Russell said.

"A couple of races ago we were on pole by 0.8 seconds (in Azerbaijan) and won the race and then last week I finished in P8.

"I've never had a season like this in my career where the performance has fluctuated so much.

"I know it's in there because you can't deliver performances like that in Baku if you've so-called 'lost it'. It's just we're struggling to have a high hit-rate.

"We don't know why that is. It's quite strange and certainly scratching our head a little bit. And it's definitely not through a lack of trying.

"I've never had it personally before in my career and I guess that's probably the priority for me in these last few races."

Russell, who beat seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in two of the three seasons they spent together at Mercedes from 2022-25, said he is confident he can rediscover his form.

"I've gone past the, you know, maybe frustration was the word I used earlier in the season," he said.

"But I'm kind of looking at it very objectively with my team and trying to keep a cool head in solving these issues. Because I know if the frustration starts to creep in and we start acting irrational with changes there's a very high chance you won't make things better.

"These performances are in there. I've lost no faith that we can do it because we've shown that."
